The city of Gloucester is on the move with a heavy duty infrastructure project to enhance two of the city’s wastewater pumping stations. The sewer improvement plan will alleviate some of the issues the city has faced due to outdated equipment and resources. Also to be addressed will be storm water discharges stemming from leaking and unstable pipelines. Recently, an agreement with several nearby communities has become the impetus to a larger plan for the state’s water systems. Focusing on water quality using advanced monitoring techniques, the Boston Harbor sewage discharges have greatly reduced. To date, nearly 200,000 gallons per day of sewage discharging to the Boston Harbor watershed have been eliminated.
Boston, did you know that the city has a new job program that provides training and certification in construction, inspection, and maintenance of green infrastructure? In order to accelerate storm water management, the training has become available under the National Green Infrastructure Certification Program. The certification will promote a qualified green workforce, as well as support community-based employment support within the city. Training will be held in fall of this year with exams in November. The current plan is anticipating expansion into even more US cities by next year.
Water restrictions notice: Due to a neighborhood infrastructure project, the city will temporarily lose up to 320,000 gallons of storage capacity in the sewer system. Because of this, the water restrictions in place are particularly important. Following the -twice per week- water use restrictions for your lawn is greatly appreciated. Sprinkler systems need not be used during rainy weather, and watering Saturday through Monday is restricted. A suggested way to avoid unnecessary use is to leave these systems in the off mode instead of automatic. This will serve as a conscientious, assistive measure in saving water.
