The City Council of Ayer has proposed a partnership in municipal services with the neighboring town of Groton. The agreement would allow Groton to receive 40,500 gallons a day from the Ayer Water facility, as well as, permitting the town to implement sewer services. There was previously a lack of wastewater capacity but through rectification, the contingency has been removed and the project will go forward. The current agenda also includes businesses and homes, which are not currently connected to the Ayer sewer system through an existing line, to be afforded the opportunity upon completion of the proposal. Residents can look forward to these changes starting in 2016.
Unusual Fact: On January 15, 1919, a storage tank holding more than 2 million gallons of molasses burst, sending a giant wave of the hot syrupy substance through the North End of Boston. It killed 21 people and several horses and injured more than 100 others, making it the worst molasses-related accident in history.
